Global Business Identifiers are an update of an old Idea Electronic Data Interchange.

Context

Identifiers are an attribute of an object that makes it an entity. We can only tracked entities by their name. So at least the sender and receiver need to agree on the meaning. GS1 is trying to create an ontology of names.
