For a network of equals, Symmetry and Equality are basically synonymous. When some nodes in the network have different functionality, both become impossible to maintain.

Context

• The original internet connected IMPs which all had the same capability and were attached with "high-speed" 56 kbps digital links.
• Then things got complicated.
