Disinformation is a direct translation from the Russian and implies a state-sponsored effort to use misinformation to control any discussion into paths advantageous to the state.

This term started to replace misinformation in the press in the 1950's.

Context

  • "Often the surest way to convey misinformation is to tell the strict truth." - Mark Twain
  • As used by business it can be considered to be public relations. For example when tobacco, chemicals or drugs were questioned a flurry of Disinformation was sure to follow.
