Definition

A political leader who seeks support by appealing to the desires and prejudices of ordinary people rather than by using rational argument.

Context

Normally this applies to nations where popular votes determine outcomes, but we will view its action in small, but still political organizations.

  • A populist seeks to spit the sweetest game, while a demagogue seeks to be the deplorables’ loudest mouthpiece. - R De Braganza, Kilifi, Kenya
  • The populist swims with the tide; the demagogue tries to persuade us that only he can turn the tide. - David Tucker, Halle, Germany
