CAT-2

TSA's 2nd generation Credential Authentication Technology (CAT-2) is a system that enhances airport security by verifying passenger identities and flight information. It performs a 1:1 face match, confirms a traveler's flight status, and allows for the acceptance of digital identification. CAT-2 is designed to improve TSA officers' ability to accurately authenticate passengers and address vulnerabilities associated with ID and boarding pass fraud.
Key Features and Functionality
Identity Verification: CAT-2 authenticates passenger IDs by scanning and analyzing them against a library of recognized IDs, including passports, driver's licenses, and digital IDs. 1:1 Face Match: The system performs a face-to-face comparison between a live photo of the traveler and the photo on their credential, providing an additional layer of security. Flight Status Verification: CAT-2 confirms a traveler's flight details by checking the Secure Flight database, ensuring the passenger is ticketed to fly that day. Digital ID Support: It supports the use of digital IDs, such as state-issued mobile driver's licenses, streamlining the verification process. Opt-out Option: Travelers have the option to opt out of the 1:1 face match and instead be processed using traditional methods. Enhanced Security: By automating identity verification and confirming flight status, CAT-2 helps to improve overall security at airports. Streamlined Experience: The system aims to provide a more efficient and secure experience for travelers, reducing wait times and enhancing convenience. How it Works: 1. Present ID: Travelers present their photo ID to a TSA officer at a CAT-2 unit. 2. Scan and Analyze: The officer inserts the ID into the CAT-2 unit, where it is scanned and analyzed. 3. Face Match (Optional): The system may perform a 1:1 face match, confirming the live photo of the traveler against the photo on their ID. 4. Flight Status Verification: The system checks the Secure Flight database to confirm the traveler's flight details. 5. Pre-screening Status: The system also displays the traveler's Secure Flight pre-screening status, such as TSA PreCheck. 6. Processing: Based on the verification results, the TSA officer either allows the passenger to proceed through security or initiates further investigation if necessary.
Deployment and Expansion
- CAT-2 is being deployed at numerous airports across the country, with plans for further expansion.
- TSA has awarded contracts to vendors like IDEMIA to manufacture, procure, and maintain CAT-2 systems, according to a press release on the TSA website.
