A (usually very small) quantity or step between physical states.

In physics, quantum refers to the smallest possible discrete unit of any physical property—like energy or matter. It’s the foundation of quantum mechanics, which governs the behavior of particles at atomic and subatomic scales.

In computing, quantum refers to technologies that leverage these principles—such as superposition, entanglement, and quantum tunneling—to perform calculations in fundamentally new ways. Quantum Computing uses qubits (quantum bits) that can exist in multiple states simultaneously, unlike classical bits (0 or 1). This allows quantum computers to explore many possible solutions at once, making them powerful for problems like:

  • Cryptography
  • Molecular modeling
  • Combinatorial optimization
