Also called a McCulloch-Pitts Neuron is an attempt to mimic an animal Neuron, originally with a purpose built computer system. While it was first described in 1947, it was not realized until Frank Rosenblatt built is Mark I computer using perceptrons as a primary physical element. He continued to build larger machines with more layer until his early death in 1971. Minskey and Papert wrote an entire book where they purported to show that it was a dead-end idea which basically blocked progress on them til the 1980's. The Large Language Models that became popular in the early 2020's are based on Multi-Level Perceptrons (MLP).
