Solipsism is the philosophical idea that only one's own mind is certain to exist. Everything else—other people, the external world, even time—might be illusions or constructs of the self.

There are three main types:

  • Metaphysical solipsism: Only the self exists.
  • Epistemological solipsism: We can only know our own mind; the external world is unknowable.
  • Methodological solipsism: A research stance that begins with the self as the only certain reference point.
